Clean Sweep* - with an astrix

All 9 senior HKFC Rugby Section teams took to the fields last weekend just like any other ordinary weekend during rugby season. However, there was one big difference! The Rugby World Cup semi final between heavyweights England and New Zealand was on at 4pm.

Of course the RWC has been going for months so the section knew we would be short players as people flew over the ditch to watch the match live but I don’t think anyone was ready for just how short we would be!

With over 80 players away in Japan, injured or at Jonny Rees’ wedding it meant that most teams were to see a subs bench as a luxury and play with the bare 15 for their games this week.

The weekend started strong with a convincing win to both Expendables and Fire. As they each put on 45 points and only conceded a try each against.

Luckily for us both teams where playing close by and before the club team one league up from them. Meaning the players could bench to help with numbers.

The Fire girls did a great job adding real impact off the bench in the Ice match. At half time Ice were locked in a real battle at 12 all but a defiant second half lead them to a 31-12 victory.

For the most part Expendies backed up Bulls who were on the HKFC pitch straight after. Despite the low numbers and tired bench Bulls played some champagne rugby to record a solid 34-7 win over the young and fit Kowloon side.

For those Expendies that didn’t reserve for Bulls they hopped in a taxi to go support Sequins over at the Rock. Sequins started the match with 15 players and no reserves. After a nasty gashed head to spiritual leader Scott Lindsey they were down to 14 until the taxi cab with replacements could arrive!! They were facing last years GC champs on a wide pitch so no doubt the average team would begin to worry. However, the calm heads of Sequins prevailed and some smart rugby helped starve the opposition of ball and good attacking opportunity. Not much else can be remember about the match as Sequins played themselves into the ground and left every part of energy they had out on the field. Somehow a 12 all draw prevailed and the miracle of Shek Kip Mei was born.

At the same time on a Kowloon field close by Scorpions started their match with 15 men also. All though it must be said that they were still a very high quality 15 and proved too strong for the City side as they ran away with a 62-0 win.

Next up was Select whose players has just been acting as reserves for the Scorps game. They too did not let this affect them and backed up for a big 85-3 win over City 2.

So Far 6 wins and 1 draw with only Club and Drags to go.

The Club game was entertaining for the 4 people who could drag themselves away from the New Zealand v England to watch. A fast start got Club out to a solid lead and even though Kowloon fought their way back into the match Club would ultimately prevail 25-14. Although a couple of early injures to starting players meant the finishers had a bit more time on the pitch then expected for Club.

This was an issue for Drags of course as players like Hugh McCormick-Houston, Ben Willis and Marcus Slade were all due to start for them. However not to fear as players from the completed Scorps game hoped in a taxi to come and bench for Dragons. This enabled the Drag side to hold its intensity and finish off with a strong 35-20 win.

Meaning that for the first time since the DoR arrived at HKFC we finished the day undefeated - with 8 wins and 1 draw!

A remarkable effort at the best of times but considering how much sacrifice went in across all the teams to put the Rugby Sections ahead of their own teams and individual needs, it was truly inspiring.
