Strong HKFC contingent for Olympic Qualifiers

All over the world kids dream of one day being an Olympian and this weekend the members of the mens Hong Kong 7’s team get the opportunity to make that dream a reality.

Years of hard work and sacrifice both individually and as a squad have lead them to the Olympic 7’s qualifying tournament in Korea this weekend. Its an easy equation – Win the tournament and Hong Kong are off to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics to compete against the worlds best in Rugby Union 7’s.

Standing in their way are 8 of the best 7’s teams Asia can offer. In their pool (pool A) Chinese Taipei and Malaysia will play Hong Kong at 1144 and 1514 (HKT) respectively on Saturday the 23rdof November. Two wins here will guarantee our lads the ever important top rank as they head into the finals on Sunday the 24th. If all goes to plan, there will be 3 matches for our boys on Sunday and 3 wins will see them Tokyo bound.

Hong Kong, the Asian games gold medalists, will be heading into the tournament as favorites. However, the squad knows that this will count for very little once the whistle blows. Performances out on the pitch are what counts and at the heart of the squad are some of our very our HKFC superstar.

All in all 5 players from HKFC have been selected in the 14 man squad and each has an important role to play this weekend.

Mike Coverdalewill play big minutes across the tournament as a prominent forward. His big engine will be pushed to its limits every game on both sides of the ball. A fierce defender and exponent of the pilfer, Mike is also the go forward man and can create opportunities for those out wide by his ability to win the contact in attack.

Max Denmarkand Liam Herbert are the x-factor of the team with real ability to score from anywhere. Max is the fastest in the squad and is a pure athlete in every sense of the meaning. While Liam could step you in a phone booth and has left many defenders in his wake in the past it’s his high work rate off the ball that is most impressive.

Russ Webbis the play maker for the team and is also expected to play big minutes while pulling the strings. A strong passing game, good vision and a deadly boot are all part of Russ’s repertoire who over the past 18 months has turned himself into the complete 7’s player.

The last HKFC player on the list is Jamie Hood. The veteran is the closest thing you can get to having a coach on the field. A survivor from the last Olympics qualifiers 4 years ago where Hong Kong came agonizingly close to realizing its dream, Jamie’s experience will be invaluable to keep the ship on course. His versatility is also crucial to the make up of the side as he can compete at a high level across numerous positions on the field.

Its not only on the pitch that HKFC members will be making an impact in Korea as the dynamic coaching duo of both Head Coach Paul John and assistant Jevon Groves will be the masterminds behind Hong Kong earning a spot in the Olympics.

From everyone here at the HKFC Rugby Section we wish our lads and the entire squad the best of luck this weekend, we know you will do us proud no matter what.
