MESSAGE FROM MR JOHN MOLLOY
CHAIRMAN HONG KONG RUGBY FOOTBALL UNION
On behalf of the Hong Kong Rugby Football Union I wish the Hong Kong Football Club Rugby Section every success for their forthcoming tour to South Africa. I would like to thank Paarl Rugby Club and Stellenbosch University for hosting the team and I hope that the games are competitive and enjoyable on the field and that off the field the true spirit of rugby touring shines through. The recent months have been most difficult for the Football Club and I hope that this tour provides a very happy conclusion to the season |
|||
|
MESSAGE FROM MR ALAN WRAGG CHAIRMAN HONG KONG FOOTBALL CLUB RUGBY SECTION I am delighted and proud that the Hong Kong Football Club Rugby Section are embarking once again on a major tour, which for the first time in a few years takes a club team away from Asia.
This year's tour is particularly poignant to the Rugby Section, not only because it is the first long tour for a while, but because we would almost certainly have a few more keen tourists travelling to South Africa if it were not for the tragic events in Bali last October.
Touring is a wonderful opportunity for Rugby players to get to know each other both on and off the field and the experience of living, training and playing together day-in, day-out cements friendships like no other. Of course, sharing a room for the first time with Andy Randall might also serve to break a few friendships (hence I understand that "short straws" are already being picked), but that is a risk worth running. My memories of touring are certainly happy ones, despite the maulings often received at the hands of teams from different shores.
The build up is over and now the Football Club Vandals must get down to business - in this case it would seem that this will be a series of gruelling extra curricula activities which will lead up to that first game against Paarl Rugby Club on 22 nd April, quickly followed by a game against Stellenbosch University on 23 rd April. My greetings and thanks go to both clubs for hosting the team.
My congratulations go to everyone connected with the arrangements for the South Africa tour. I know that you will perform on and off the field in the best traditions of Hong Kong Football Club Rugby and that in memory of those who are now playing in a better place, you will make this not only the best Football Club tour ever, but one with memories which will be with you for the rest of your lives. |

Playing since he was 9, he should have a formidable set of rugby playing skills, but with hands like feet and the self-discipline of a virgin in a whorehouse - he's unpredictable at best. Quoted as saying: "moving to Hong Kong was like that allusive first kiss very strange at first but ultimately very satisfying" and as HKFC Womens team can confirm, Randy has been, well
RANDY!
A Legal Eagle, Tour responsibilities will include liaising with law authorities, negotiating bonds post arrest and representing tourists that have breached tour "etiquette". Beware! Randy is mean card player and Sun City Casinos better have plenty of cash on hand when he hits the tables. |

Having arrived in Hong Kong in the early 90s I immediately joined the HKFC to play Rugby... or so I thought. Unsure about what quality of rugby to expect I was keen to try my skills in a 7 a side game only to have the second half decided with a boat-race of rum and cokes. From then on I knew Hong Kong rugby was for me. |

In his playing heyday (which lasted for a period of 17 days about 15 years ago), Dom struck fear into the bloodless hearts of opponents by swathing his head in bandages and using it as a battering ram. Moments of glory on the pitch since are non-existent, although off it, he has certainly had a few .A French & German graduate, his multi-skilled tongue has seen action around the world and fresh from his first Football Club tour to the Manila 10s, he is now looking to get to grips with the South African tongue. |

When not spending my free time tirelessly raising money for a variety of childrens charities and helping old ladies across the road, I like to relax by practicing the fine arts of origami and ikebana. Much like a modern day Samurai.
This will be my first trip to South Africa and I fully intend to immerse myself, deeply, into the local culture. I have little doubt it will be a colouful experience and I look forward to slicing my way through opposition defences, again much like a modern day Samurai. |

On coming to Hong Kong, I decided to play again mainly to get Club Membership, but also because everyone else was so old. Its great, except all my teammates are encouraging me to hang up my boots again. |

Cookie has been playing rugby for 38 seasons and still thinks hes 25. What he now lacks in speed and power he makes up with in wisdom, drinking skills and the ability to entertain off the field.
A professional rugby tourist with many years of experience, responsibilities, along with Jacksons, include the song sheets and the exact location of local karaoke bars. Cookie can also hit a mean golf ball and is expected to be at the top of the pack in the longest drive competition at Sun City. |

Now I am crap but like to think of myself as a top tourist (when not whingeing). Very recently engaged so will be on my best behaviour all tour. |

Renowned for talking a far better game than I play. I have played rugby in several countries, the pinnacle of my career being representing Bombay Gymkhana in the world-famous League of India.
This will be my second tour to South Africa, but last time I was still under the illusion I was fairly good with a blossoming rugby career ahead of me. This time I know better. |

Started rugby quite late (17 yrs old) but made up for lost time. Experience ranges from French 1st to 3rd division, depending on age and fat. I have always relied more on speed rather than on my technical skills. Loved playing 7s when young and fit; love watching it now that I am old and fat.
I am now the unique promoter of the French Flair at the HKFC; but it seems I am not being heard much Will try to shout louder next season |

BALI TRAGEDYSATURDAY12th OCTOBER 2002
In memory of those Hong Kong Football Club Members and Supporters whose lives were taken by an act of terrorism on the peaceful island of Bali:
CLIVE WALTON, Rugby Section Captain; PETER RECORD, Rugby Section Member; JAKE YOUNG, Rugby Section Member; TOM HOLMES, Rugby and Hockey Section Member; STEVIE SPEIRS, Rugby Section Member; SHANE WALSH-TILL, Club Member; DAN MILLER, Rugby and Hockey Section Member; ANNIKA LINDEN, Supporter; CHARLES VANRENEN, Rugby Section Member; BETTINA BRANDES, Supporter; ED WALLER, Rugby, Hockey and Soccer Section Member.
When the blast went off
they would have been standing there in a tight circle as they always are when beers are in hand
.still wearing their bauhinia jerseys, big smiles, laughing
united by rugby and friendship. (SCMP 15th October 2002)
The Bali Bombings untied our Club in sorrow. But with that unity also came the strength and hope to send a message ot the world that we will not be daunted; and that we will respond to cruelty not with cruelty, but with kindness; to anger not with anger, but forgiveness; and to hate not with hate, but love.
You can remember them and only that theyve gone Or you can cherish their memory and make them live on You can cry, close your mind and turn your back, Or you can do what theyd want, keep smiling, open your eyes and play on |
This South Africa Tour was originally planned by Clive Walton who was the ultimate Tourist. Stevie was on the Tour Committee and the others would have no doubt joined the tour without a second thought.
We tour as the HKFC Vandals in their honour and their memory may their spirit be forever and may we raise a beer or two in their name.
